Three fundamental approaches were proposed by the collaboration with Kanno Lab of Tohoku University.
1. Deinstitutionalization; To design a space which is similar to the home.
2. The barrier free ; To activate the communication with corporate organizations in neighborhood.
3. The workshop system ; To organize the facilities with the cooperation work, by participating with children of tenants and neighbors.
The residential building was designed a flat type for the first to third floor, and a maisonette type for fourth and fifth floor, oriented a complex of two buildings. To afford the service path, each floors were set back along the slope, rood balcony and living space were combined. The living rooms for children were separated to small units (houses) as it possible, the kitchen and dining room was planned as a main space for staffs, and each zones were connected with bridge room, defined as middle units (houses) by consideration of management. Private rooms are located for living, openings can be correspondent to the free furniture configuration.
The communication space is the main corporate organization of the complex of welfare facilities. At the first floor, the various rooms were established for corporations’ use and neighbors on the first floor, and for the volunteer reference service of the region welfare activity, main entrance and offices on the second floor of street level. The chapel (gymnasium) accommodates 250 of the removable seats to afford multipurpose use of worship, concert and lecture. The reflector was established on the top of the stage, the floor planning and finishing material of the stage area were considered the acoustic, that is simulated by Yoshino Lab of Tohoku University.
